  • In the case of a grocery store, they’d have an actual physical presence in the state along with revenue and employees, so I (a total laymen) don’t see how that’s comparable to a website like Lemmy. Even PornHub would be different IMO since they have paid content and the transaction would be happening in Texas. A site like Lemmy earns nothing from its users and doesn’t sell anything so it seems like it’d be quite the stretch to hold them accountable for the actions of some kid on the other side of the country (or planet) since Texas jurisdiction ends at the border of Texas.

  • OP it could be helpful to add some context here as flying somewhere like Hawaii and driving an hour to a beach in NW Washington are going to have completely different recommendations.

Flying limits what you can bring and the climate of the beach you’re traveling to can make a difference too. More northern areas aren’t going to be as hot or dry so it might be advisable to bring a rain jacket or sweater and no swimming gear because the water is too cold.

  • I’ve always hated this argument as manufacturers dictate what we get and manipulate people into thinking that whatever new thing they added is what people want via marketing.

Couple this with the fact that most people get their devices (here in the US at least) from their carrier store who contract with only a few manufacturers and you wind up in the situation that we’re currently in where every phone is a clone of the next and are only separated by the quality of the hardware contained within.

There has never been a time where manufacturers actually gave users an option. If you want something like a removable battery you’re stuck with some Fisher Price looking phone using 10 year old hardware. People who make arguments such as yours then point to the low sales of this phone and claim “see! Nobody wants removable batteries!” ignoring the fact that said phone has a million drawbacks that outweigh the one good thing.

  • People have no idea how fortunate this is until it’s gone. Several years ago we had a bad algae bloom in the river that supplies our water and we couldn’t drink it for a couple weeks. Every store in town was out of water and you had people with well water leaving hoses and signs out front of their house offering it up to people. One Pilot gas station tried scalping 6 packs of Dasani for ~$50. It’s so crazy how you take it for granted until you can’t just go to the sink to fill up a cup of water (we have excellent tap water) along with taking for granted the fact that stores have bottled water on the shelves.

Ever since then we’ve kept a small stock pile of water in the garage just in case.

  • Case in point the freeways where I live are limited to 65MPH but you cross the border into either neighboring state and magically 70-75MPH is the safe limit. It makes no sense apart from generating revenue from speeding tickets. Most commuters do 75-80MPH depending on traffic.

The low speed limit also has the side effect of causing those slow, oblivious drivers to immediately crank the wheel over into the left lane the second they merge on the highway and then set their cruise control to 62MPH while they get passed by every car around them causing massive congestion behind them and lots of lane changes.
