  • I guess part of it is that each platform wants to be specific to the purpose of its own network/platform. Mastodon as a Twitter/Tumblr like microblog site, PixelFed like Instagram, Friendica like Facebook, so on and so forth. Align all terminology to one set of terms I think takes away from the uniqueness of each platform. If you want the truly neutral default cross-Fediverse term, then just use the one from the ActivityPub spec. That pleases every Fediverse platform equally, i.e. not at all.

    Users = Actors. Upvote/Favourite/React = Like. Post/Note/Toot/Thread = Object. Happy? Didn’t think so.

    When one network interacts on another, the target will do its best to translate your actions into the way it does things. That’s why Link posts from Mastodon appear so wonky in Lemmy, and you can only reply to Mastodon users who posted in a Lemmy community.

  • (Edit: Misclicked reply) the attitude part is pretty common for Lemmy users: passionate, with strong views enough to migrate away from the mainstream. You are free to dislike Stamets or anyone else. It’s still important to understand that nobody’s perfect, no need to have one’s flaws be used to tank the good accomplishments they’ve done for the platform.

  • Quirky is definitely the best fit, if you are worried about an ambiguous context using a descriptor.

    Still, don’t discard weird as a word altogether like a slur so quickly. “Keep Portland Weird”, “Weird Al Yankovic”, still describes stuff that are a little unusual but cool to be around, and the fact that this word comes up in the context of US politics shouldn’t remove one of the word’s many meanings.

    A guy at a bar who always shows up with round sunglasses and a tie dye shirt, ordering a glass of milk is the cool kind of weird. A guy who spends all their time talking about themselves are the annoying antisocial kind of weird. Someone who sits next to a washroom staring at the ass of every person going in and out of it is the creep kind of weird.
