I wanted to work for NASA one day. I realized I was a dumb motherfucker, could barely pass HS maths, so now I’m a cybersec drone.
But my job is extremely chill WFH, so i get to explore my other interests so much more. It was never meant to be, that’s okay.
Now I just want to get good at something and use that to do stuff that I can be proud of, that I can show to other people and they can be impressed by.
I feel like all my life people just do things so much more easily than what comes to me and I don’t have any talent, so that doesn’t help, I don’t want to be some schmuck that just watches TV or scrolls social media poisoning herself with alcohol all her life.

AI is a good thing as long as it’s open-source non-commercial used by normal people (not govcorp), nothing wrong with proompting some images in the same way there’s nothing wrong with pirating some plugins and throwing a fun track in FL together or even a remix or forking a GitHub project and changing it etc etc. Corpos and/or closed source can fuck off though. Information wants to be free.
It’s certainly not comparable to “extended bureaucracy” (read: regulations that protect people from predatory big tech corpos and far-right leaders of that industry like Musk) and surveillance, which you just kinda threw in there to fill out the buzzwords. Like that one is obviously a bad thing but has no rhyme or reason to be with the rest.
Have to say this wouldn’t affect me, not because I don’t have any empathy but only cold, logical political solidarity, but also because I wouldn’t really class myself as particularly intelligent. I’m just walking here
Well I have a simple formula just for this:
If they believe things I believe, like things I like and go to the web pages I do: they’re a productive, well-socialized chad ubermensch patrician. No online issues there, even if they spend 24/7 online they must need it.
If they don’t believe things I believe, don’t like the things I like, and go to websites I avoid: they’re too online, probably an incel too and likely a terrorist in the making and sorely need to touch grass and should have their internet connection stopped.

I just use the digital wellbeing timer in the settings on my phone.
For the pixel on A12/13 It’s under “Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls” -> “App Limits”. Then just hit the sand clock icon next to the app and it should let you choose a timer. 1 min before the timer runs out, you’ll get a notification and the app will turn greyscale, similarly to Bedtime mode if you use that. Once the timer runs out a toast notification will popup asking you to either change the timer or close the app IIRC. Bear in mind in either case the app will be killed hard, so all of your temp data (i.e. Lemmy comment in progress) will be lost.

App timers work well for me. I wouldn’t say I’m addicted though, I browse the internet a lot but it’s by choice, I find it useful and entertaining. I set my timers to 40m, but I rarely exceed half that unless I’m browsing memes with the gf and showing them to her.
