  • I’m completely on board with that, except for the “wish fulfillment”. I don’t know how it got twisted around that you could presume to tell God what to do or that he would - it seems so entirely inconsistent with anything else about religious beliefs

So we have this all powerful and all knowing supreme being , right? And he’s got a plan for the entire universe and all of time, right? But he’ll disrupt all of that to grant you a favor if you wish hard enough? Or you can blame him if something bad happens to you specifically, out of all the universe over all time? What hubris, what ego could make us think we’re in control and can use it for personal gain?

  • Man, I used to think I was so handy, doing household, appliance, and car repairs, etc ……

It’s been a while since I needed to do anything, and now I have this cursed ikea furniture. Somehow it took three weekends to put a bed together, and it’s not even done since I broke another part. I’ve never before broken ikea furniture on assembly and have never needed support or replacement parts, yet this effing bed has needed replacements twice.

I don’t know if my hands are cursed and I’ll never again be handy, or if it’s ikea

  • You may also have a freezer not working correctly: should follow OP’s recommendation of de-cluttering, but also clean the door seal and make sure it’s in good shape, and remove any ice accumulation.

Most consumer freezers will run a de-icing stage. They intentionally warm up for a little bit to melt accumulated ice. However when you melt ice cream then refreeze without churning, it freezes harder. A non-cluttered freezer should complete its de-icing without melting ice cream. A freezer with an effective door seal will have more consistent temperatures (and use less energy), without melting ice cream.

Alternatively, many chest freezers do not have a de-icing cycle so ice cream should remain softer despite the lower temperature those run at. Unfortunately I can’t claim to have verified this because ice cream gets consumed too quickly and never makes it to the chest freezer

  • It’s your freezer. I’ve also been buying Tillamook lately because it is softer and creamier: I can scoop it with an ice cream scoop. I certainly can’t drop a spoon in it, nor can I usually scoop it without destroying a normal spoon. I have to assume that you’re either using hyperbole or your freezer is not working correctly

  • Well I’m not wearing pants, but that’s because I work from home and only have to look dressed in Zoom!

I have to say that I consider moving hard left over my adult life to be maturation. When I was younger, I did believe that Republicans were fiscally conservative, I did believe they cared anbout family values, I did believe their claims about small government and trickle down . But over time I realized they really weren’t anny of those and I was just getting trickled upon. Over time, their claims have been getting farther from the truth, and their policies more spiteful and mean, more harmful. Most importantly I focus on building a better future, yet Republican policies tend to rob the future to enrich someone now. Republican policies make life harder on most people in order to ease the lives of wealthy. Republican ideas of family and family values differ from any Christian ideal I’m familiar with, and really aren’t connected to reality

  • Maybe, but cars are already pretty good about reading signs.

It’s the lack of signs that’s the problem. Self-driving cars are pretty good on a well marked and signed road: if that’s all it took, we’re there. It’s the ubiquity of exceptions and edge cases that’s the problem.

My car recently did a one month trial of self-driving and it was a lot of fun. Also eye-opening. It did work really well on well-marked roads. However it also made me notice just how poorly marked most are. For example, it was great about staying centered between lane lines. However most local roads don’t paint the edge lines, or even the center line is worn off on many roads. Then the car is confused. I can’t even imagine what the car would do if everything were covered with snow, which does happen a lot around here
