  • This is all assuming it’s a spinning disk and not an SSD, so ignore me if that’s the case:

Given SAS drives are usually used in data centre storage array applications and 3TB disks have been kinda small for that use case for a fair while, there’s a fairly high chance it was in heavy use for a good number of years. I’d bet it’s probably well on its way to being a paperweight regardless of your connectivity situation.

If you do get it hooked up, don’t store anything on it you wouldn’t be okay losing.

  • The first one is pretty much down to, as Gabe Newell puts it, “piracy is a service problem”. Spotify came along and (initially) provided a much better service compared to pirating your music at the time. Once they created the market segment, competitors started their own streaming subscriptions. I’d also say the Google music “upload 50,000 tracks for free” got a lot of former pirates to jump.

Now the services are going through the same enshittification that most popular online services seem to be going through, we can see piracy increasing again. Someone will notice and fill the gap in providing a good service again at some point and the pendulum will swing once more

  • Emphatically disagree with you on image quality, the cameras are pretty much the only thing that are still noticeably improving between phone generations for me. This improvement is seen by proper photography review companies like DxO too.

Digital zoom is still shit today, but it was so much worse back then. We now at least have AI supersampling doing something slightly better.

The photos you’re looking at must be either cherry picked, perfect conditions, day time photography, or you just don’t know what to look for when comparing image quality.

The easiest comparisons to see the difference will be low-light night time photography, and photos with high dynamic range, such as shooting through a bright window from inside a dark room, etc.

This is all without pointing out that video image quality (using those same cameras) has improved even more noticeably since the phones you’re talking about. And with people increasingly caring about shooting video, this also explains why.

  • I specifically don’t comment on people that give off the vibe they might be one of those kind of nutjobs, precisely because it gives them a notification with my username attached if I do. I’m on this site to kill some time with low effort, I want to minimise the risk of attracting the attention of some weirdo.

I downvote in those scenarios and then report if appropriate. If enough other users feel the same way the comment goes down to the bottom of the thread and fewer users see it. Especially if it’s something that a mod eventually removes, as it reduces the reach until a mod can get to it.

If I risk retaliation for doing that, I (and others) will just stop, meaning those comments stay up front & centre and we lose that soft moderation plus that engagement in general. Going into the comments will just end up being a worse experience

OP you had one job. It’s NZB as per your link, not NBZ

And in answer to your question, it’s like a torrent file but for Usenet. You will need a news-server subscription to download the content they describe and you’ll generally need an indexer (similar to a torrent tracker) to find them. Most of the good indexers also charge a fee

  • I’ve had to block it because it takes up two screens of my phone as my client doesn’t support spoiler tags properly. I’m not going to change my client over one noisy bot.

Also MBFC seems to be a bit biased (it’s definitely not correct on a few in the UK), as most bias rankings are, it’s why services like Ground News use several of these services to make up their ratings. At the end of the day only using MBFC data isn’t much better than listening to one guy tell you “yeah they’re totally fine”

Finally from what little discussion I’ve seen with the owner of the bot, they don’t seem to be very collaborative with the rest of the community and just shut down criticism.
