I agree with eating healthy, but if you’re buying cheese-it’s, as an example, the generic brand is equally bad for you as the name brand. You should still try to make healthy choices, but name brand doesn’t make anything healthy.

Most people are being very specific, but I’d say consumables in general. Rarely is a name brand food or medicine any different than generic. Often they’re literally produced in the same factory. Stuff that’s meant to last, generally a more expensive product will be made more durable (not always), but this isn’t a consideration with consumables. If it’s a one-time use or edible, I’m going with the cheapest option 99% of the time.

In my opinion, the book is almost alway “better” but they’re different. A show or movie can be more entertaining for the unit of time you spend on it, but you’ll be reading a lot longer. It can also introduce new people to great books. For example, how many people read the Game of Thrones series after the show started?

Movies/shows can be great, especially for well written stories. They have to be different than the books, because they have less time and actually have to re-create what the book only has to describe. They are a good part of the entertainment ecosystem, and even if the book is better. Alternative versions existing do not harm the book. They can exist together.

Just a heads up, you can use the same name on another instance anyway. You can’t really sit on the name except on an instance on Lemmy. Lemmy.world has the largest number, but it should be diversified in case they go bad or rogue. If you did decide to create a community, I’d recommend doing it on another instance just to attempt to spread things out some. Putting everything on one instance is a recipe for disaster, like the Reddit issues.

I’m just wondering what kind of content is specific to gay gamers? I would think that the reason there isn’t enough content is because pretty much all of it could just be in another community. If people want to socialize with only that subgroup then that’s fine, but plenty of gay stuff is talked about in regular gaming communities.

It probably wasn’t my first one because I have been playing games younger than I can remember, but the first one I remember playing is The Lion King. You don’t forget playing that game. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to make a game about a kid’s movie so damn difficult?

The vast majority of people I see declaring we’re #1 are taking credit for it but not working to be the best in the world. It’s the people who are saying we shouldn’t help other people outside the US (or even inside). It’s not a declaration of intent for most people. It’s a badge of pride that they don’t deserve and don’t intend to maintain.

If it actually were used like you imply, I don’t doubt we would be the best. It would require us working to improve the world around us, not just benefit ourselves. Usually it’s said out of nationalism though, not optimism.

Your path is similar to mine. It also almost identical to my religious path too. Essentially I was born into something, told I was supposed to respect and obey it (without a reason for why), and realized there are so many competing groups saying they’re also the best/correct, but that can only be true for one of them. This means most people have to be wrong, if not everyone.

I was also in boy scouts and am an eagle scout. One of the requirements for that is the belief in a god of some kind (usually the Christian one, but not strictly required), and it has tons of nationalism involved. I still finished with the rank of eagle, but it’s fair to say I was faking a lot of stuff by the end of it. (Tangent: I really like the idea of scouting, but it really needs to get rid of this stuff. There are alternatives, but none are as good.)
